Allgäu-based drive specialist mayr power transmission will present fail-safe brakes for robotics and automation, a sensorless brake monitoring module and customer-specific hollow shaft brakes at SPS 2026 in Nuremberg, held on 24–26 November. According to the company’s announcement of 15 October 2026, the products will be on show in Hall 4, Booth 278.

The company stresses that fail-safe brakes, which engage when de-energised, form the basis for protecting people and material in automated production, on robots and on gravity-loaded axes. The integrated solutions mayr is presenting include the ROBA-topstop safety brake series and the ROBA-brake-checker monitoring module used with it.

A retrofittable brake between motor and output

ROBA-topstop holds loads in position and prevents uncontrolled movement during power failures or emergency stops, the company says. Because it sits between the motor and the output, it can be retrofitted to existing machines, which mayr says reduces effort and cost. Sealing at the interfaces keeps out dust and moisture, so the unit reaches IP66 as standard. Removing the drive does not release vertical axes, an advantage during servicing and transport, while flexible flange sizes make it easier to fit into existing machine designs. According to the company, TÜV has classified ROBA-topstop as a “well-tried component” under category 1.

The modular ROBA-servostop series offers servo brakes with hub and toothed rotor for standard servo motors, in classic or slim designs. mayr describes ROBA-servostop Cobot as a solution for integration into the joints of lightweight robots.

Hollow shaft brakes for large-bore direct drives

Torque motors with a large free inner diameter are used where high torque is required, in robotics, observation technology, maritime systems and deep-sea robotics. Finding safety brakes with the same ring-shaped geometry is a challenge, the company notes, and mayr develops customer-specific electromagnetic hollow shaft brakes for this purpose. They can be seen on the booth and discussed with experts at a round table.

Sensorless monitoring and safety validation

ROBA-brake-checker determines the brake condition from current and voltage trends without additional sensors, detecting switching time, coil temperature and functional reserve. With ROBA-gateway, the module becomes network-capable, so data can feed remote maintenance systems or digital twins. A validation tool that includes the B10d safety characteristic value is intended to simplify dimensioning to DIN EN ISO 13849-1. Structured as a checklist with brake information on basic and well-tried safety principles and fault lists according to DIN EN ISO 13849-2, it helps engineers determine whether a brake qualifies as a well-tried component in a given application.
